What "Biological Age" Actually Means, Senolytics Take On Alzheimer's, the One-Minute Workout — and Four Other Reads Worth Your Time

Seven things worth reading this week: four on longevity and health, three on performance and fitness. We spent last week on the GLP-1 wave, so this week we sit that one out. What's left is arguably more useful anyway — the levers you can actually pull.


Longevity & Health


1. What your "biological age" actually means

Biological-age tests are everywhere now, a swab, a fee, and a number that says you're "really" 47 or 61. This overview steps back and asks the harder question: are these epigenetic clocks reliable enough to act on? The useful takeaways are refreshingly concrete. Smoking, higher BMI, elevated glucose, and poor blood-pressure profiles consistently show up as accelerating measured aging; physical activity and a healthier diet slow it. But the reliability of consumer tests, and how any of this should guide actual clinical decisions, is still very much unsettled.


Why read it: it cuts through the biological-age hype with a clear-eyed sense of what the science can and can't yet tell you.



2. Senolytics take aim at Alzheimer's

One of aging biology's boldest ideas is finally being tested in human brains: clear out senescent "zombie" cells, the ones that stop dividing but linger and spew inflammation, and you might slow age-related disease. This review pulls together the first two small human trials (SToMP-AD and STAMINA) of the senolytic combo dasatinib plus quercetin in older adults with Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment. The drugs reached the brain, looked safe, and nudged inflammatory markers down; in one trial, a drop in TNF-α tracked with better cognitive scores.


Why read it: it's a front-row look at geroscience moving from mice to people — with the honest caveats (tiny samples, open-label) built in.




3. The dementia-prevention lever hiding in your blood-pressure cuff

Amid the exotic longevity bets, it's easy to overlook one of the best-evidenced brain-protective moves we have. In the SPRINT MIND study, driving systolic blood pressure toward an intensive target (under 120 vs. under 140 mmHg) cut the risk of mild cognitive impairment by roughly 19%, and the combined risk of MCI-or-dementia by about 15%, with the benefit holding up across extended follow-up.


Why read it: it's a reminder that a cheap, widely available intervention you can start this month rivals anything in the supplement aisle for protecting the aging brain.



4. Creatine's quieter role: the aging brain

Creatine is famous as a gym supplement, but the more interesting recent story is the "muscle–brain axis." The brain is an energy-hungry organ, creatine buffers cellular energy, and researchers are asking whether that helps cognition under stress or age. A 2025 pilot in Alzheimer's patients found high-dose creatine feasible and well-tolerated, measurably raised brain creatine levels, and hinted at cognitive signals worth chasing in larger trials. Why read it: a cheap, well-studied compound with a plausible brain-energy rationale, genuinely promising, still early, and not right for everyone (see the disclaimer).




Performance & Fitness


5. The fitness number that keeps beating the field

If you tracked only one metric for long-term health, a strong case says it should be cardiorespiratory fitness, VO₂max, your ceiling for using oxygen. In a cohort of more than 14,000 patients followed for a decade, the fittest had roughly half the mortality risk of the least fit, with risk falling at every step in between. Fitness also appears to blunt other threats: the mortality penalty of high blood sugar shrinks substantially in people with above-average aerobic capacity.


Why read it: unlike your age or genes, VO₂max is trainable, making it one of the few heavily predictive risk markers you can actually move.



6. The one-minute workout that counts

The most common reason people skip exercise is time. "VILPA" vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity, dismantles that excuse. It's the brief, sweaty bursts already hiding in your day: sprinting for a bus, taking stairs two at a time, hauling groceries. In a wearable-tracked study of 25,000+ self-described non-exercisers, about three one-to-two-minute bursts a day were associated with a 38–40% lower risk of all-cause and cancer death and a 48–49% lower risk of cardiovascular death, echoed by a newer nationally representative US analysis.


Why read it: it reframes movement entirely, the activity was already going to happen; the trick is doing it with intent and intensity.





7. Put "light weights for seniors" to bed


A stubborn myth says older adults should stick to feather-light weights and endless reps. The current evidence pushes back hard: heavy, progressive resistance training is both safe and effective well into later life, driving the strength and function gains that lighter loads often can't. And it matters, low muscular strength predicts future mobility limits, falls, and fractures, and grip strength remains one of the cheapest, most reliable proxies for how well you're aging.


Why read it: it's the actionable, evidence-based case for loading the body progressively at any age — with good coaching, the real risk is staying too weak, not lifting heavy.

The through-line: the strongest interventions in this batch aren't exotic, controlling blood pressure, training aerobic capacity, lifting heavy, moving hard for a minute at a time, and a couple of low-cost bets with real science behind them. Trainable, mostly free, and measurable. The molecule of the month will keep changing. These don't.
